In The Moon Isn't Far Enough, I translated appropriated images made by Spirit and Opportunity, two of the NASA Mars rovers, into period processes used historically by photographer Timothy O’Sullivan in the first photographic surveys of the American West. Aesthetic similarities between the two initially attracted my attention. Resonance among the Rovers’ images and O’Sullivan’s grew into the discussion of the role of photography in exploration and dominion over the untouched throughout time. My work illuminates these ideas through the metamorphosis of digital images into tintypes and albumen prints. Through their increasingly elaborate reproduction my work both illuminates their function as documents, as well as negates this same function by adding additional layers or separation between the viewer and the landscape.
